Marcos GT

1968 Marcos GT 1600

Marcos was a small English car manufacturer, founded in Luton in 1959 by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. The name Marcos was the merger of the first three letters of Marsh's surname with the first three of Costin. The make remained in business, with some interruptions, until 2007. Offered intermittently between 1964 and 1990, initially with a fibreglass body and a wooden chassis, the Marcos GT weighed a little over 800kg. The 1964 model featured a Volvo P1800 engine, while the later models had steel chassis, Ford engines with other power units available. The car was out of production from 1972 to 1981, when small scale kit production recommenced. The original GT continued to be built until 1990, being developed into its altered Mantula form. This was further developed into more powerful and aggressively-styled designs, culminating in the 1994 LM600, which went on to compete in the 1995 Le Mans 24-hour race. This example is a restored 1968 Marcos 1600 with a new fibreglass body, an original plywood chassis, a Ford Kent crossflow engine, and custom leather upholstery. 

La Marcos era una piccola casa automobilistica inglese, fondata a Luton nel 1959 da Jem Marsh e Frank Costin. Il nome Marcos era la fusione delle prime tre lettere del cognome di Marsh con le prime tre di Costin. Il marchio è rimasto in attività, con alcune interruzioni, fino al 2007. Prodotta in modo intermittente tra il 1964 e il 1990, inizialmente con carrozzeria in vetroresina e telaio in legno, la Marcos GT pesava poco più di 800 kg. Il modello del 1964 aveva un motore Volvo P1800, mentre i modelli successivi avevano telaio in acciaio, motori Ford e altri propulsori. L'auto restò fuori produzione dal 1972 al 1981, quando venne nuovamente offerta in kit su piccola scala. La GT continuò così ad essere costruita fino al 1990, sino al modello speciale Mantula che fu ulteriormente sviluppato in versioni più potenti e aggressive che culminarono nel 1994 nella LM600, che partecipò alla 24 ore di Le Mans del 1995. Questa del post è una Marcos 1600 del 1968 restaurata con una nuova carrozzeria in fibra di vetro, telaio originale in legno compensato, motore Ford Kent Crossflow e rivestimenti in pelle artigianali.
