When I first met Giancarlo Cornetta, five or six years ago at a party by Mr. Martini in Verona, he was still "only" a musician. Effectively, Gianka's first life is as percussionist in a very well known Italian group called "Velvet"... But, in the last few years, while animating the Roman nights or organising exciting DJ sets at "In Officina" (the restaurant bar just beside the Cafe Twin shopfloor), Gianka has been spending a significant part of his second life learning how to build bikes... And here we come to the point. This is not the first Gianka's project with Cafe Twin, but it is certainly my favourite so far and proves that creativity delivers results in any field. The donor bike is not certainly known for having the most exciting lines of the last 20 year motorcycling production: a Yamaha XT660X. But it is a very effective motard bike and, important detail to be considered, is deadly cheap on the second hand market! The idea was hence to customize an affordable bike in order to get a funny, light and reliable scrambler to ride around in style. Accordingly, the tail of the subframe was cut and closed with a Triumph rack. Frame, forks, rims and the swingarm of the stock bike are black. Hence, no additional costs were incurred for powder coating. The exhaust system is interesting: the upper part comes from a Yamaha Tenère, the central pipes come from a Bonnie while the mufflers are from... A VW Beatle! The tiny stock fuel tank, and the hidden fuel pump, are still there... But the tank was modified in order to be fitted with a fiberglass cover which replicates the shape of a classic Honda tank. And what about the radiator's expansion tank? An old army's flask! New knobby tires and a sober paint scheme completed the project... Mission accomplished: a bloody a good idea.

Quando ho conosciuto Giancarlo Cornetta, cinque o sei anni fa a una festa da Mr. Martini a Verona, era ancora "soltanto" un musicista. In effetti, molti conoscono Giancarlo come batterista dei "Velvet": ma è solo la sua prima vita... Negli ultimi anni, mentre animava le notti romane o organizzava emozionanti dj set "In Officina" (il bar ristorante proprio accanto alla officina Cafe Twin), Gianka ha trascorso una parte significativa della sua seconda vita imparando a costruire moto... E qui veniamo al punto. Questo non è il progetto Gianka con Cafe Twin, ma, finora, è sicuramente il mio preferito, e dimostra che la creatività porta risultati in ogni campo. La moto di partenza non è certamente famosa per avere le linee più accattivanti della produzione motociclistica dell'ultimo ventennio: una Yamaha XT660X. Ma si tratta di una motard molto efficace e, dettaglio importante, si trova davvero a poco sul mercato dell'usato! L'idea era quindi di personalizzare una moto a prezzi accessibili per ottenere una scrambler leggera, divertente e affidabile da godersi con stile. Di conseguenza, il telaio sottosella è stato tagliato e chiuso con un portapacchi di origine Triumph. Telaio, forcella, cerchi e forcellone di serie sono già neri: quindi, niente costi aggiuntivi di verniciatura a polvere. Il sistema di scarico è interessante: i collettori sono stati donati da una Yamaha Ténéré, la parte centrale è di origine Bonnie, mentre i terminali... erano di una Maggiolone Volkswagen! Il piccolo serbatoio di serie, con la sua pompa benzina, è ancora lì... Ma è stato modificato per essere coperto da un guscio in vetroresina che riproduce la forma di un classico serbatoio Honda. E che ne dite del vaso di espansione? Una vecchia borraccia militare! I nuovi pneumatici tassellati e la verniciatura sobria completano il progetto... Un'idea fottutamente buona! Missione compiuta.
