BMW R80 Daga (the short sword of the ancient Romans) by Matteucci Garage

"I’ve been waiting long before putting my hands on a special version of this brand. This bike was born for EICMA 2016, built in a month. I wanted a cafe racer in a style that I haven’t choosen for a while, fast and aggressive, evil and black, just like a smiling pirate, showing his golden teeth. The lines are basic but this build has got all the features of a sport bike: the shape and the size of the fly screen (which used to be a piece of a Harman Kardon subwoofer), the minimal tank that has the same length of the engine, creating a unique footprint line and the little tail with the embedded tail light. The rear sub-frame is entirely hand-bent stainless steel, a simple line like the brushwork of a painter who gives form and style to the bike. The upholstery work done by Marozzi Interior was precious: the front fairing, the seat and the side panels of the aluminum tail are covered by genuine leather. An essential feature are the tracktoos: incisions made on the the leather by Sconcio, handmade scares to give the motorcycle its particular unique aged style. The Motogadget instruments are also minimal: the mini speedo and double-sided handlebar indicators. Where there was the airbox there is now a custom made tool box. The color scheme is the final result of several trials. The matt black matches the leather, the glossy black enhances the shape of the fuel tank and the golden pinstriping with pearly reflections is enhanced by the sunlight to make the bike shining in a discreet and elegant way. The cone air filters give a modern touch and together with the short mufflers are custom made as well. The inverted fork by Marzocchi and the Brembo gold series brake system allowed to move down the center of gravity and gave this motorcycle a unique handling, and now the bike is even able to stop in a reasonable space! Despite the distance from the stock version, all modifications are fully reversible and no cut was made to the frame. Extremely light and ready to bend, Daga is sharp just like her name." "Ho aspettato molto prima di cimentarmi in una versione special di questo modello e marca. Questa moto è nata in occasione dell’EICMA 2016 con un solo mese di tempo. Volevo una moto versione caffè racer come non ne facevo da tempo, aggressiva e veloce, nera e cattiva, come un pirata che ti ride in faccia mostrando i suoi denti d’oro. Ha una linea essenziale ma completa di tutti gli elementi di una vera sportiva. Linee e ingombri ridotti per il mini cupolino (realizzato da un subwoofer Harman Kardon), il mini serbatoio che ha la larghezza del motore creando una linea d’ingombro unica e quel codino appena accennato che incorpora la luce posteriore al suo interno. Tutto il telaietto posteriore è in acciaio inox curvato a mano, una linea semplice come la pennellata di un pittore che da forma e stile alla moto e sostiene in sospensione anche un piccolo cuscino d’appoggio posteriore. Prezioso il lavoro di tappezzeria eseguito ad arte da Marozzi Interni che con la pelle ha rivestito il cupolino anteriore, la sella e i fianchetti in alluminio della coda. Contributo essenziale sono i tracktoo. Incisioni e tatto eseguiti su pelle da Sconcio, realizzati a mano per conferire alla moto quelle cicatrici che ne rafforzano l’unicità. Essenziale anche la strumentazione con mini speedo e frecce bifacciali a manubrio motogadget. Al posto del filtro aria originale è stato costruito un ripiano per alloggiare il suo kit attrezzi originale. La colorazione è stato frutto di molte prove. Un nero opaco che lega con la pelle, nero lucido per esaltare il mini serbatoio e un oro olivastro con riflessi perlati che si esalta sotto la luce del sole per dare lucentezza in modo discreto ed elegante. Artigianali sono anche i filtri aria a cono con un design più moderno e lo scarico con terminale a doppia canna corta. Avantreno con steli rovesciati Marzocchi e sistema frenante Brembo serie oro le conferiscono infine una guidabilità unica spostando in basso il baricentro, e ora frena anche! Nonostante l’evidente diversità dal modello originale, questa BMW può tornare all’origine, totalmente reversibile alla versione precedente in quanto nessun taglio è stato operato al telaio. Pronta alla piega e capace di osare con estrema leggerezza Daga si inserisce tra le curve proprio come una piccola spada affilata." Marco Matteucci
