1982 Yamaha XT550 "Tanuki" - Dirt Track custom build by Rice Eaters: a new Italian team on the custom scene

"This bike is named after the Japanese mythology character Tanuki. The Tanuki (Ed: the Japanese raccoon dog) is a creature particularly skillful in disguise and shapeshifting. The choice of this name was grounded in the radical transformation that this bike had to be subject to: found in the Padua countryside, abandoned and semi disassembled in a barn, it immediately drew our attention. To bring it back to life we had to work first to find all the missing parts, and eventually we proceeded with the customization. We decided to replace the original drum brake at the front end with a disc brake, to improve safety taking into account the planned improvements of performance. We reworked the fork sleeves, coming from two different bikes, to give them the same size and brushed aluminum finish. Given the condition of the bike, everything has been revised, the frame was disassembled and repainted, most of the mechanical components sandblasted and powder coated. The engine was disassembled, completely overhauled and repainted before tuning. The carburetors were cleaned, overhauled and mirror-polished. The sponge filter, the Super Trapp muffler and the stainless steel exhaust make the riding of this bike pure fun! When it comes to the color scheme, we wanted to reinterpret the classic Yamaha Speed Block livery. The tank comes from a Yamaha XS400, the tail and the seat are modified aftermarket parts. The fly screen is handmade and hosts an asymmetric LED spotlight. Handlebars and grips are Biltwell. Since the project was implemented with the purpose of being introduced at the 3rd Scrambler Challenge of Lignano Sabbiadoro, where we got the 1st place, we heavily focused on the classic style of the racers from the 70’s. "

"La moto prende il suo nome dalla mitologia Giapponese, il Tanuki (una specie di procione locale ndr.) infatti è una creatura esperta nel travestimento e mutaforma, questa scelta trova fondamento nella radicale trasformazione che questa moto ha subito. Trovata nella campagna Padovana, abbandonata semi smontata in un fienile, ha catturato subito la nostra attenzione. Per riportarla a nuova vita abbiamo dovuto faticare innanzitutto per reperire tutti i pezzi necessari al suo corretto funzionamento, poi abbiamo proceduto con la customizzazione vera e propria. All'anteriore abbiamo deciso di sostituire il freno a tamburo originale con un freno a disco, per migliorare la sicurezza in previsione dell'aumento delle performance. Abbiamo rilavorato i foderi degli steli, provenienti da due moto diverse, per dargli le stesse dimensioni e una finitura in alluminio satinato. Visto lo stato di abbandono tutto è stato rivisto, il telaio smontato e riverniciato, la maggior parte delle componenti meccaniche sabbiate e riverniciate a polvere, il motore è stato smontato revisionato e riverniciato, ed infine messo a punto. I carburatori sono stati lucidati a specchio dopo essere stati anch'essi rimessi a nuovo. Con Filtri in spugna performanti, terminale Super Trapp e collettori in acciaio inox artigianali il divertimento è assicurato! Per quanto riguarda l'estetica abbiamo voluto reinterpretare la classica livrea Yamaha Speed Block, in occasione della ricorrenza del suo 60° anniversario. Il serbatoio proviene da una Yamaha XS400, il codino e la sella sono aftermarket modificati. Per quanto riguarda l'anteriore la mascherina è realizzata artigianalmente ed ospita un faretto led asimetrico. Manubrio e manopole sono Biltwell. Poichè il progetto è stato realizzato con lo scopo di essere presentato e di gareggiare al 3° Scrambler Challenge di Lignano Sabbiadoro, in cui ci siamo posizionati al 1° posto, abbiamo puntato molto sull'animo corsaiolo anni 70 delle gare su terra, un classico di quei tempi".
