Did you really meet Lucifer?

You may probably have already seen the latest build of EEM (*). But, unless you saw this bike live, I'm afraid you are missing something...

Today I'd like to introduce you (and describe) Lucifer the way you have never seen...

Probabilmente avrete già visto l'ultima realizzazione di EEM (*). Ma, a meno che non abbiate visto questa moto dal vivo, ho paura che vi manchi qualcosa... Oggi vi presento Lucifero come non l'avete mai visto e nessuno ve l'ha mai descritto.

“I’d like a bike which mix the past with the future”. That’s what the customer asked for the guys at Emporio Elaborazioni Meccaniche in Rome when they started this project based on a 1989 R100RT. So Andrea “Dopz” Erba, Giuliano “Schizzo” Minutillo and friends tried to design something versatile, light, powerful and with a futuristic touch. 

"Vorrei una moto che mischi il passato con il futuro". Questo è ciò che ha chiesto il cliente ai ragazzi di Emporio Elaborazioni Meccaniche a Roma quando è partito il progetto sulla base di questa R100RT del 1989. Così Andrea "Dopz" Erba, Giuliano "Schizzo" Minutillo & co. hanno cercato di progettare qualcosa di versatile, leggero, potente e con un tocco futuristico. 

First thing, the gas tank was changed with a R75 one, which apparently the owner was in love with. Then the subframe has been rebuilt and strengthened in order to have an effective and more aggressive riding position. The tail has been minimized to compensate the large shouders of the fuel tank and to give the bike a proper light style. On this base, the new rear indicators work also as tail light and the registration plate is also lit by an invisible LED light.

Per prima cosa, il serbatoio è stato sostituito con quello di una R75, di cui, a quanto pare, il proprietario della moto era innamorato. Poi il telaio sottosella è stato ricostruito e rafforzato, al fine di avere una posizione di guida efficace e più aggressiva. La coda è stata ridotta al minimo per compensare le grandi spalle del serbatoio del carburante e per conferire alle linee della moto leggerezza. Su questa base, i nuovi indicatori posteriori funzionano anche come la luce stop e di posizione e anche la targa è illuminata da una luce a LED invisibile. 

In order to obtain a perfect rideability, the entire front end has been changed using new inverted Yamaha forks, a Tagasako spoke wheel and, thanks to a custom billet flange, a new 320 mm rotor. The brakes department has been entirely revised with new components and braided lines. The triple plates have been obviously reworked and provided with a couple of billet risers where an enduro handlebar has been installed. “At this point, the front end was exactly what we were looking for!” Dopz says. 

Per ottenere una perfetta guidabilità, l'intero avantreno è stato modificato utilizzando un nuova forcella rovesciata Yamaha, un cerchio a raggi Takasagoe, grazie ad una flangia artigianale ricavata dal pieno, un nuovo disco freno da 320 mm. Il reparto freni è stato completamente rivisto con nuovi componenti e cavi in treccia. Le piastre di sterzo sono state ovviamente rilavorate e dotate di un paio di risers ricavati dal pieno su cui è stato installato un manubrio da enduro. "A questo punto, l'avantreno era esattamente come volevamo!", Dice Dopz.

Also the rear end received special cares. The rear rim is coming from a modern BMW GS. Dopz told me that this was the worst bit, since the drive shaft needed to be modified in order to don’t hit the wheel. Once the problem was solved, the work has been completed with a new Ohlins monoshock (which, on the roads of Rome, is a real plus!). 

Anche il retrotreno ha ricevuto cure speciali. Il cerchio posteriore è stato prelevato da una moderna BMW GS. Dopz mi ha detto che questa è stata la parte più complicata del lavoro, dato che il cardano doveva essere modificato per non urtare la nuova ruota. Risolto il problema, il lavoro è stato completato con un nuovo monoammortizzatore Ohlins (che, sulle strade di Roma, è un vero vantaggio!).

The electrics have been completely reengineered. After several tests, a new minimal lithium battery proved effective in giving energy enough to move the big pistons of the boxer. It has been hidden in a custom aluminium box which fits in the former airbox space between the crankcases. The engine was overhauled but mainly left stock. It now breaths trough a couple of conical air filters and a customized 2-in-1 exhaust system by Arrow.

L'impianto elettrico è stato completamente reingegnerizzato. Dopo varie prove, una nuova batteria minimale al litio si è rivelata capace dello spunto necessario a spostare i grandi pistoni del boxer. E' stata nascosta in un box artiginale di alluminio che si inserisce nello spazio lasciato libero dall'airbox tra i carter. Il motore è stato revisionato, ma lasciato sostanzialmente originale. Ora respira attraverso un paio di filtri aria conici e un sistema di scarico 2-in-1 Arrow customizzato.

At this point the bike was almost completed but it was still missing the futuristic part required by the client. The inspiration came from the movie Tron Legacy and, in particular, from the helmets of the Daft Punk characters. A new powerful LED headlight has been hidden behind a polycarbonate, custom made, fly screen, so it is virtually invisible when turned off. In addition, however, a spare high beam light has been installed directly on the frame, behind the front forks. Finally, an ultramodern digital speedo has been mounted on the dashboard. Dopz says it is deliberately a touch of trash which completes very well the style of the bike. 

A questo punto la moto era quasi completa, ma mancava ancora la parte futuristica richiesta dal cliente. L'ispirazione è venuta dal film Tron Legacy e, in particolare, dagli elmetti usati dal gruppo musicale Daft Punk. Un nuovo potente faro a LED è stato nascosto dietro un cupolino realizzato artigianalmente in policarbonato, praticamente invisibile quando è spento. Inoltre, un faro di profondita addizionale è stato installato direttamente sul telaio, dietro la forcella. Infine, un contachilometri digitale ultra moderno è stato montato sul cruscotto. Dopz dice è volutamente un tocco "tamarro" che completa bene lo stile della moto.

A peculiarity of the bike, which is a typical EEM detail, are the footrests, which have been built using an old Regina transmission chain. The name of the bike? Lucifer, whose etymology is “someone who brings light”. The reason is easy to understand. Dopz says that riding this bike is a pure pleasure thanks to its lightness (30 kg less than the stock R100RT) and improved handling… And I like to think that the name is also due to something diabolic…

Una particolarità della moto - un tipico dettaglio EEM - sono le pedane, che sono state costruite usando una vecchia catena di trasmissione Regina. Il nome della moto? Lucifero, la cui etimologia è "colui che porta la luce". La ragione è facile comprendere. Dopz dice guidare questa moto è puro piacere grazie alla sua leggerezza (30 kg in meno rispetto alla R100RT di derivazione) e alla migliorata manegevolezza... Così mi piace pensare il nome sia anche dovuto a qualcosa di  diabolico in questa realizzazione...
