Iron Cafè Noir by Comete Motorcycles

Jerome of Un Pneu dans la Tombe drew yesterday my attention on the French Comete brand run by his friend Guillaume Drapier. Born in 1983, Guillaume studied Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering in several first class colleges around the world, before completing an MBA at Imperial College Business School. After working for a couple of years in Asia, Guillaume returned to Europe to work in the luxury goods industry in Paris. After buying his first Harley he found himself unable to find products that suited his needs on the existing market. So Guillaume started designing and building his own parts in a basement in the 10th arrondissement. Months later, he released his first range of 10 side plates that he sold online. The seed had been planted: Guillaume’s three passions- motorcycles, design and industry- were combined, and Comete Motocycles was born. Last Autumn 2012 the brand made its transition to a full-time business with its own catalogue and moves to Lille. Finally, this Spring, Comete released its first showbikes: the one I show you today is named Café Noir…  

Ieri, Jerome di Un Pneu dans la Tombe ha richiamato la mia attenzione sul marchio francese Comete del suo amico Guillaume Drapier. Nato nel 1983, Guillaume ha studiato Disegno Industriale e Ingegneria Meccanica in diversi top college in tutto il mondo, prima di completare un MBA presso l'Imperial College Business School. Dopo aver lavorato per un paio di anni in Asia, Guillaume è tornato in Europa per lavorare nel settore dei beni di lusso a Parigi. Poichè, dopo aver acquistato la sua prima Harley gli è risultato impossibile trovare prodotti che si adattassero al suo gusto, Guillaume ha iniziato a progettare e costruire i propri pezzi in una cantina nel 10° arrondissement. Mesi dopo ha messo in vendita online il suo primo stock di fianchetti. Il seme era stato piantato: le tre passioni di Guillaume -moto, design e industria - si sono combinati, e Comete Motocycles è nata. Lo scorso autunno l’attività è diventato un business a tempo pieno con un proprio catalogo ed è stata trasferita a Lille. Infine, questa primavera, Comete ha presentato le sue prime showbikes: quella che vi mostro oggi è la Café Noir...

Using a 2007 Iron donor bike, this café racer inspired Sporty plays the simplicity card. The interesting part is that, according to the builder, it has a customisation budget of only €1,500. Changes made are all coming from the Comete Catalogue of parts, entirely made in France, and included: coil relocation paired with side-mount speedometer, clip on’s, stock headlight bracket in a lowered position to remove the ugly original headlight eyebrow, dashboard relocation, front and rear indicators’ relocation (but… where?), leather solo seat, fork brace with Comete minimudguard… No details are provided about the nice cone filters and about the exhausts… So I’m slightly afraid that these components could lead the budget to another level… But, nevertheless, I like what I see… 

Partendo da una Sporty iron del 2007, questo Sporty di ispirazione cafè racer gioca la carta della semplicità. La parte interessante è che, secondo il costruttore, ha un budget modifiche di soli € 1.500. Le modifiche apportate sono tutte provenienti dal Catalogo Comete di componenti interamente realizzate in Francia, e consistono: nello spostameno del contachilometri, montato lateralmente, nei semimanubri racing, nell’utilizzo della staffa del faro in posizione abbassata per rimuovere la brutta palpebra originale, nello spostamento del cruscotto, il riposizionamento delle frecce (ma dove sono?), nella sella monoposto in pelle, nella piastra anti svirgolo con nuovo mini parafango... Nessun dettaglio viene fornito sul bel filtro aperto a cono e né sugli scarichi... Quindi temo che questi bei pezzi portino il budget su un altro livello ... Ma, in ogni caso, mi piace quel che vedo...
